New Research on Montessori Education
A School Experience that Shapes a Life

Every parent wants to give their child the kind of education that nurtures strong academics. Parents also want their children to develop a positive well-being. The gift of a Montessori education is increasingly being shown to offer both. A new study of nearly 2,000 adults finds that Montessori education is consistently linked with higher adult well-being and that the Primary and full 3-year cycles your children experience at The Montessori School of San Antonio may be especially powerful.
A large study led by Dr. Angeline Lillard and colleagues looked at 1,905 adults, ages 18–81, about half of whom had attended Montessori for at least two years and half who had been in conventional schools. Even after accounting for factors like childhood socioeconomic status, race, gender, and time spent in private schools, adults who had Montessori in childhood reported higher life satisfaction, more energy and vitality, stronger relationships, and a greater sense of purpose.
This research offers three encouraging messages:
- Choosing Montessori at age three is a meaningful long-term investment in your child’s future well-being, not just an early-childhood preference.
- Staying through the full 3-year cycles (Primary, Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, and Middle School) appears to be associated with higher adult engagement and a stronger sense of purpose.
- Continuing Montessori into the elementary and middle years still matters; the study found that Montessori attendance through ages 12–14 remained significantly linked with higher adult well-being, even though the early years are especially powerful.
The study’s authors are careful to note that no single study can prove causation, and every child’s story is unique. Yet taken together with decades of Montessori research, these findings affirm what many of you have sensed as you watch your children grow at MSSA: the quiet, steady work they do today is shaping the kind of adults they will become.
